Three ways to split PDF pages

By ranges

Best when you know the page numbers: a scanned bundle of five invoices, or a thesis whose chapters start on known pages. Type 1-4, 5-9, 10- and you get three files. Ranges can overlap, and a backwards range like 9-5 outputs those pages in reverse.

Every N pages

For uniform stacks: a 60-page scan of two-page forms splits into 30 files with N = 2. N = 1 bursts the document into single pages.

Extract picked pages

Tap thumbnails to choose the pages you need, say the signature page and the schedule from a contract, and save them as one new PDF. This is the quickest way to extract pages from a PDF without retyping numbers.

What stays the same

Split files are made by copying page objects, so text, vector drawings, and embedded images are untouched. Links that jump to pages which ended up in a different file stop working, and the original document’s bookmarks aren’t carried over.

Notice 12-9: a backwards range outputs pages in reverse order, and 20- runs to the last page, whatever that is.

Questions

How do I split a PDF into separate files?

Open the PDF, choose “By ranges” and type the pieces you want, e.g. 1-4, 5-9, 10-. Each piece becomes its own PDF and they download together as a ZIP. “Every N pages” cuts the file into equal chunks.

How do I extract a few pages from a PDF?

Choose “Extract picked”, tap the pages you want, and save. They come out as one new PDF, in document order. Or type ranges and tick “Put all ranges in one file”.

Can I split every page into its own PDF?

Yes: choose “Every N pages” and set it to 1. A 40-page file gives you 40 single-page PDFs in a ZIP.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied, not re-rendered, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution. The exception is password-protected files, whose pages have to be re-drawn as images.

Why is each split file almost as big as the original?

Pages often share one set of embedded fonts and images. Every split file needs its own copy of whatever its pages use, so ten split files can add up to more than the original.
